The short answer
Choose wired access points when the building can support Ethernet or another dependable wired backhaul. Consider mesh when new cable is impractical but access-point placement can still provide a strong wireless backhaul. Treat a plug-in extender as a narrow workaround, not the default design for a large home or business.
Why backhaul matters
A Wi-Fi device must first reach an access point, and that access point must then carry the traffic toward the router and internet connection. With wired backhaul, the second leg uses Ethernet instead of competing for airtime. A mesh node uses Wi-Fi for that second leg unless it has a cable, so placement and radio conditions matter. An extender must hear the original signal well enough to repeat it; putting one inside the dead zone does not create a healthy source signal.
When mesh is reasonable
Mesh can be practical in finished buildings where opening walls is disproportionate to the problem. The nodes still need deliberate placement. A node placed where the source connection is marginal may show strong bars nearby while delivering inconsistent throughput or latency.
What to evaluate before buying hardware
Document the rooms and outdoor areas that matter, construction materials, wired devices, internet speed, device count and locations where cable is feasible. Test both signal and real application performance. One fast speed test beside a router does not prove roaming, video-call stability or coverage at the edge of the property.
A better decision rule
Use the least complicated design that meets the measured requirement. That may be one correctly positioned access point, several wired access points, or a carefully placed mesh system. Adding radios without a channel and placement plan can increase interference instead of solving it.

Will a Wi-Fi extender increase my internet speed?
Not necessarily. It can extend reach, but it cannot improve the upstream signal it receives and may reduce usable throughput.
